Oxford Outlook: The Best of Bicester

IT takes a certain kind of person to run toward danger rather than away from it. In the case of Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler, the two firefighters killed in the dreadful blaze at an Oxfordshire business park last week, theirs is a tragic story – but also an inspiring one.

Jennie was a “much loved daughter” to her parents, who “found her calling three years ago when she joined the fire service.” “When Jennie’s pager went off, there was no stopping her,” the family said in a BBC report, featured in this week’s Oxford Newsletter.

In a separate family tribute, Martyn was said to be “born” to be a firefighter, with an “outstanding” passion for and dedication to the job.

Both families should be immensely proud of Jennie, 30 and Martyn, 38, who died long before their time.

Lest we forget, two other firefighters were in hospital after suffering serious injuries, while 57-year old Dave Chester, who also died in the Bicester Motion fire, was a hero, not a victim, his family said.

People like Jennie and Martyn lived lives not so different from our own  – Jennie ran a dog business and attended shows with her dog Mouse, Martyn “was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and all-round family member, an amazing friend”.

But in one fundamental respect they stand apart from most of the rest of us – namely, their selfless courage. They belong to a very select group - the paramedics who put themselves at risk every time they are called to an emergency, the long-term care workers who braved the Covid-19 pandemic in order to look after our most vulnerable citizens, members of the Army’s bomb disposal units, to name just a few of these amazing people.

They are the best of Britain, and we should be forever grateful to them for keeping us safe.

  • In our celebrity-dominated culture, we are told that King Charles sent David Beckham, Chipping Norton’s most famous near-resident (sorry Jeremy!) a 50th birthday gift of roses. This horticulturally-shattering news emerged – where else? – at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show earlier this week, where they were seen chatting together. Gawd.
